Making A Case For Non-Surgical Adult Scoliosis Treatment

I found a study from the end of last year out of The European Spine Journal.
130 Adults with idiopathic curves less than 35° were separated into two groups to test traditional physical therapy vs scoliosis specific exercises that reinforce active self correction. What they found after a year is what we are finding as well. Adults can be taught, they can learn to change their posture habits and how to maintain their changes over time.
Before Posture Correction
Changes can occur not only in the actual degrees of curvature. Changes occur in strength, body awareness, and self image. I have found patients come in with the feeling of no control over their own bodies and with a completely false understanding of how their scoliosis bends. More often then not they are exercising, stretching, or just plane sitting right into their scoliosis.
Conscious Posture Correction
Schroth exercises were created with a greater understanding of how Scoliosis wants to move. A spine with scoliosis will always seek to side bend and rotate into the curvature. It is when we can control the side bend and rotation that we truly control the scoliosis.
After hands on one-on-one session our scoliosis patient relearn how to sit, stand and internalize how to take control of their spines.
